Tony Martin - Tirreno Adriatico 2016 |
Ready for the transformation? Inspired by a post on Facebook by a friend of mine (Italian photographer Francesco Bonasera), who was indicating Tony as best rider of Paris Roubaix, I studied a bit in detail the results of the German rider during last 4-5 years.
I am now convinced that Martin "has studied" a lot, to be the "next Cancellara" in the one day classics. It's not a case that he lost a bit of charme in the individual time trial (he failed to win the World Championship in last 2 edition), but obtaining on the other hand some great days in Tour de France stages in the same years. In 2015 he won the cobblestone stage in Cambrai (mark this one). In 2014 he won solo in Mulhouse, after the Gran Ballon climb. It's not a case. I believe that Martin decided his career needed something more than all possible thophees with ITT and he focused on one day races, more precisely, Paris Roubaix.
It was not a case we saw him at Strade Bianche working very hard far away from the finish, and it's not a case his great performance in Roubaix 2016, the last one by the team leader Tom Boonen.
