Appena tornato dal Tour ecco che il mio amico Edmond Hood ha dovuto subito affrontare la mia curiosità. Io e lui ci siamo incontrati in tre occasioni; l’ultima al Giro, a Milano, per un caffè al bar della stazione dopo l’ultima tappa a cronometro. Non abbiamo mai avuto il tempo di parlare per davvero, di scambiare qualche opinione, di capire il punto di vista dell’altro. Lavoriamo entrambi per PezCyclingNews. Una passione, più che lavoro. Entrambi viviamo questa esperienza quasi fosse una seconda vita, un’altra chance che abbiamo da giocare. Ho dato sfogo, come dicevo, alla mia fantasia approfittando del diario che Ed ha tenuto sulle pagine di Albumciclismo ed ecco a voi ciò che ne è uscito fuori.

Da quanto lavori con PEZ? Ho cominciato circa quattro anni fa.
Come hai trovato PEZ? Qualcuno conosceva il sito ed ha pensato che potesse fare per me.
Come fai a far convivere il tuo lavoro comune con la tua passione per il giornalismo? Talvolta è difficile; fare il commerciante in Scozia al giorno d’oggi è durissimo. Ma la cosa più complicata è quella di “saltare” da un ruolo all’altro – quasi fossi un attore. Penso comunque di poter migliorare e già lo sto facendo perché in questo Tour non ho fatto fatica ad ambientarmi, come a volte è accaduto in passato, quando mi ci volevano uno o due giorni.
Quante corse ha seguito per PEZ? Quest’anno ho fatto l’Het Volk, Kurne, Primavera, Fiandre, Giro, Tour e, spero, Mondiali e Lombardia. Avrei potuto far tutte le Classiche ma devo pensare anche al mio lavoro ed alla mia donna. In passato ho anche fatto Roubaix e Liegi. Ma lavoro un sacco anche dietro le quinte con le interviste telefoniche. Stasera tocca a Bert Roesems.
Quale esperienza giornalistica ti è rimasta più impressa? La “moto” al Tour – ho goduto per ciascun metro!
Cosa preferisci: partenza, arrivo o passaggio? Adoro gli sprint di gruppo. Cipo era il mio idolo. Mi manca moltissimo.
Qual è il tuo piatto preferito? Le lasagne.
Hai mai visto un posto, durante i tuoi viaggi, dove ti piacerebbe andare a vivere? Le Fiandre, la Toscana, Bergamo.
Chi è il tou corridore preferito e perché? Bruno Risi – l’ultimo dei pro’. Guy Schmet – il re delle kermesse. Daniele Bennati – il più fico. Bert Roesems – un grande uomo. Di sempre: Merckx, Sercu, Cipo, Tom Simpson, Robert Millar, Ole Ritter.
C’è invece un ciclista che proprio non ti va a genio? Davvero un paio ci sarebbero, ma chissà che non debba intervistarli, un giorno. Meglio non far nomi! Quelli beccati col doping mi intristiscono.
Qual è la corsa che preferisci? La Primavera
Quando hai cominciato a guardare il ciclismo? 1969 – Merckx che vinceva l’ultima crono del Tour, in TV. 1970 – Hugh Porter che vince il mondiale ad inseguimento a Leicester, sempre alla TV. Mi innamorai del bagliore delle maglie e dei raggi, della velocità, della folla, delle bici favolose ed aerodinamiche.
Quale corsa hai visto su strada la prima volta? Il Grand Prix Concarneau in notturna 1974. Sercu correva con la maglia verde conquistata al Tour di quell’anno. Aveva il colore delle querce ed indossava scarpette di cuoio lucido bianche e nere ed un caschetto – era un Dio!
Che ne pensa tua moglie della tua passione? Io e Marlene non siamo sposati ma lei sa che senza il ciclismo sono nulla.
Hai figli? Uno.
A che pensi prima di addormentarti la sera prima di una nuova esperienza dietro un Tour? Penso a come impostare le storie che andrò a raccontare.
E la sera in cui questa esperienza termina? A quanto è stato meraviglioso e come fare meglio la prossima volta.
Il miglior ciclista era… perché… Merckx, un guerriero che doveva vincere. Tom Simpson, che veniva dalle miniere di carbone del nord England e si vestì con i colori dell’arcobaleno. Robert Millar, il più grande ciclista Scozzese, tutt’ora sottostimato. Cipo, un vero personaggio, il più veloce di tutti con uno stile meraviglioso – non sai quanto mi manca.
E’ cambiato il ciclismo? Cosa è cambiato? La cosa peggiore sono i ciclisti che programmano una corsa all’anno. Merckx, Gimondi, De Vlaeminck correvano sempre e comunque. Ho paura che adesso ci siano troppi soldi.
Hai mai corso? In Scozia, soprattutto a crono. Me la cavavo con le crono a squadre; quattro volte nella squadra che ha vinto la 100 km nazionale. Sono anche stato con la squadra che ha vinto il titolo nazionale ad inseguimento.
Mai scalato un mostro di montagna? Difficile da credersi ma ero anche nella squadra che ha vinto il campionato nazionale Scozzese di scalata a Glasgow, negli anni ’80.
Meglio un giorno di pioggia in Scozia o un dopocorsa incasinato nella sala stampa del Tour? Sempre il Tour (o il Giro).
Che ne pensi dei giornalisti professionisti? Qualcuno è un grande – Philippe Brunel è il mio idolo. Altri sono dei fannulloni; vedo troppe facce e braccia bianche in sala stampa – come fai a prendere sole lì dentro?
Che ne pensi di PEZ? Mi ha cambiato la vita, ora non posso immaginarla senza.
E della squadra che fa parte di PEZ? Gente in gamba: tu, Pez, Al Hamilton, Jered, Matt, Gordan e tutti gli altri – dovremmo incontrarci un giorno per una grande festa e per ubriacarci di Grappa e Peroni!

How did you find PEZ? My buddy knew the Pez site and thought that the stuff I did would suit Pez.
How do you match your normal activity with your journalist passion? Sometimes it is hard, the world of commerce in Scotland is not great just now. But the most difficult thing is to get 'in and out of character' for the two roles - just like an actor. I think I am getting better at becoming a journo quickly though, I think I did good work from the start at le Tour, usually it takes me a day or two.
How many races did you cover for PEZ? This year: Het Volk, Kuurne, Primavera, Flanders, Giro, Tour and hopefully The Worlds, Lombardy. It could have been all of the Classics, but I have to think of my girl and my business. In the past I've done Roubaix and Liege. But I do alot of 'retro' stuff and I do telephone interviews too - tonight I am ringing Bert Roesems.
Is there a journalist experience that impressed you more? 'Moto' in the Tour - I smiled every metre !

When did you start to watch cycling and why? 1969 - I saw Eddy Merckx winning the final time trial of le Tour on TV. 1970 - I saw Hugh Porter winning the world pursuit title at Leicester on TV. I loved the shimmer of the silk jerseys, the glistening spokes, the speed, the crowds, the glamour, the slim, sleek bicycles.
Which was your first race from roadside and when? Grand Prix Concarneau Nocturne 1974. Sercu rode in his green jersey from the Tour, he has the colour of oak and wore matching black and white patent leather cycling shoes and crash hat - he was a God !
What does your wife think about your passion? Marlene and I are not married, but she knows that with out cycling I am a shell.
Do you have sons? Yes, one.
What´s the last think before going sleep before a GT coverage? Story angles.
What´s the last think before going sleep after a GT coverage? How great the day was and what we could have done better.
Your favourite cyclist ever was... because... Merckx, a warrior who HAD to win #Tom Simpson, who took himself from the coal mines of Northern England to the rainbow jersey # Robert Millar, Scotland's best and still under rated # Cipo, the coolest, the fastest, with the best style and the best quotes - I miss him so much.
Is the cycling changed in the years? What has changed? The worst thing is riders who build their season on one race, Merckx, Gimondi, De Vlaeminck and the 'greats' raced all year. Too much money now, I fear.
Do you ride? I used to race in Scotland, chronos mostly but road too. I was a good TTT rider, four times in the team which won the Scottish 100 kiometres. I was also in the team which won the Scottish team pursuit championship.
Did you ever try to climb a HC mountain? Hard to believe, but I was in the winning team for the Scottish hill climb championships, near Glasgow, in the 80's.
Better a rainy day in Scotland or an after race in TdF press room? Toujours le Tour (or Giro)
What do you think about pro journalists? Some are amazing - Plilippe Brunel is my idol. Some are lazy, there are many white arms and faces in the press room - you do not get a sun tan in there !
What do you think about PEZ? It has changed my life, I could not imagine a life without it.
What do you think about PEZ crew? Great guys: you, Pez, Al Hamilton, Jered, Matt, Gordan and all the rest - we should all meet up for a huge party one day and drink too much Grappa and Peroni !
